I hope you have enjoyed your weekend. Mine was enjoyable as we stayed in the Valley this week. I'm looking forward to this week. It is hard to believe we only have two weeks left of this quarter.
LESSONS
The Galileo Benchmark test will take place on Thursday, February 25th. Please ensure your child is well-rested and eats a big breakfast in preparation! We will also have class pictures on Friday, February 26th.
English: We will have twenty-eight spelling words this week and a test Friday. We will be writing an opinion essay about which literature book is our favorite. Students will recite “By Myself” by Eloise Greenfield on Wednesday. They will receive a new poem, “Dream Variations” by Langston Hughes which will be due Friday, March 5th. Finally, we will continue reading The Little Prince.
Math: Students will learn about perimeter, which is the distance around the outside of a figure, this week in math. They will be tested on Friday over area and perimeter.
Science: In science this week, students will start the life science unit. Students will take a look at what produces, consumers, and decomposers are as well as a closer look at the sun (which provides most of the energy our planet needs for life).

If you missed my email last week, I sent home some papers for you to review and consider reviewing with your child. It is graded work and some reports (missing work, test/quiz/major paper scores, and current grades). As I said in the email, some students went down to a D last week because of failing to turn in some work. (That is the only reason I sent home the grade report. That isn't a custom because we don't want to reduce students to a grade.) Other students went from a D to C or better because of turning in missing work or having good scores on some tests. Either way, with time about to run out on this quarter, I want to make sure you are aware. If you have any questions or printing needs, just let me know.

History: Students will be reading and discussing chapters 6 & 7. They will be identifying the key characteristics of the Creek, Seminole, Cherokee, and the Mahicans. Students will discuss how the Spanish Explorers affected the health of the native peoples and ultimately caused the population decline. In addition, they will be looking at maps of the Mississippi River region and the lands of the eastern woodlands of North America. This week they will also be completing the Unit 4 study guide in preparation for the end-of-unit test. A review of all vocabulary and key points will occur the following Monday, with the test on Tuesday of quarter 3 week 9.
