I hope you have enjoyed your weekend and that your child was able to find success Friday during the 100% remote learning day. This week will be a little wonky because we have Wednesday off. Here are some additional notes about this week.
MONDAY - Return Work
In-person students need to return all of the work they completed on Friday. Remote learning students should turn everything in on Google Classroom as usual.
WEDNESDAY: NO SCHOOL - Veterans Day
THURSDAY - Galileo Test
This Thursday, students will be taking their second installment of the Galileo assessment. This assessment does not impact the students' grades but is used for internal decisions such as who needs interventions and where to focus our instruction. Thus, please help your child understand the importance of these tests but that they don't need to stress out over these. Also, please ensure that they get good rest the night before and a good meal that morning. Remote learning families will get a reminder email regarding the log-in information.

MATH FACTS
I've seen a good deal of growth in my students' knowledge of their math facts in recent weeks, but some students are still struggling to find success here. We do practice math facts each day in class, but the amount of time we have to practice math facts is insufficient for many students. Please make math facts practice a regular part of your child's afterschool routine. (Memorization of math facts is one of the most important skills students must master in third-grade.)
LESSONS
ELA: We will continue reading Narnia this week. Spelling will be condensed due to the holiday, please ensure extra practice on our pre-test Thursday in preparation for Friday’s test. We will also be working on grammar. There will be a grammar test next week, so expect a study guide by the end of the week. It will be important to study at home!
Math: This week students will work on mastering two more math facts: 7’s and 8’s. They will continue to solve multiplication and division problems using these facts.
History: Students will study the role of women during the Roman Empire and how Rome transitions from a republic to an empire.
Science: In science this week, students will continue to look at light. The focus this week will be on how light causes changes. To do this, students will watch how to construct a solar oven and use the oven to see the impact solar energy has on different objects.
The solar oven created for the class uses these items: a 9x12x8 inch box, four sheets of poster board, packing tape, aluminum foil, black construction paper, 16x16x1 inch seat foam, 7.6x7.6 inch cake pan, and the glass from a 9x12 inch picture frame. There are directions online for a much easier solar oven using a pizza box if a student would like to create one at home. The larger one created for class instruction should have better results and make the impact of solar/light energy more obvious.
