Quarter 2 Week 3 Update

Greetings Families, 

It was so good getting to see and talk with you last week. If I didn't get a chance to meet with you, let me know if you would like to reschedule. I really appreciated the feedback that you were able to offer. I'm so excited to keep moving forward and to see what great things the students will accomplish this year. I'm so grateful to be their teacher. 

Here are a few things to remember going into this week before I get to this week's lessons.

REMOTE LEARNING READING SCHEDULE

Tuesday:

  • 2:30-2:40 = Peyton
  • 2:40-2:50 = Arnav
  • 2:50-3:00 = Rylee
Thursday
  • 2:30-2:40 = Alec
  • 2:40-2:50 = Aubrey

REMOTE LEARNING MATH INSTRUCTION

Remote learning students will sign into the regular teaching Zoom link at 7:50 a.m. to receive math instruction from Ms. Rasic. I wrote more about this in the math section below. 


READ-A-THON

If your child has not turned in a green slip (or any paper is fine) with regard to who their classical literary character or historical figure is, please have them do so as soon as possible. Or, you are welcome to email me. I would have for them to come with an inappropriate costume (no pop-culture).

All outfits must be able to be worn throughout the day and they must be able to play at recess and PE in the outfit. 


LESSONS

Math: During week three, students will solve world problems that involve multiplying a multiple digit number by a single digit number and long division.

Remote Learning Math

To ensure that all students are receiving the best instruction and support possible, starting quarter 2, week 3, Ms. Rasic will take over math instruction for all remote learning students. By doing so, she will be able to improve the level of participation of the remote learning students and better assess each child's growth and performance.

Students will be expected to sign into the regular teaching Zoom at 7:50 a.m. to begin math instruction. Students will not participate in the regular morning announcements. Math instruction will last approximately 60 minutes and end around 8:50. Students will then have around a 20-minute break before Spalding instruction with Ms. Sipel. Students may use this time to work on XtraMath or math homework, or they may use this time for other parent-directed activities.

History: This week, students will be studying the Punic Wars and answering the questions: Who was Hannibal and why did he make the bold attack against Rome in the Second Punic War? In addition, they will identify that The Punic Wars were a struggle between the cities of Rome and Carthage, understand that Latin was the native language of ancient Romans, and the significance of the Punic Wars. They will also learn about Julius Caesar’s expansion of territory under Roman control and recognize the Greek influence in Roman Culture.

Science: This week in science, students will be looking at how to model the characteristics of sound: pitch (wavelength/frequency) and volume (intensity). Then, students will consider why sounds are quieter when they are far away even if they have the same volume (intensity) at the source.

ELA: This week, students will learn 15 words. The assessment will be on Thursday to create space for our Read-a-thon celebration. In literature this week, students will be reading ancient myths to discuss literature concepts. Students should start bringing in their copes of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which they will start reading next week. For writing and grammar, students will have a number of different activities this week. They will take sentences and reward them while keeping the same meaning. They will start with one sentence and build it into a paragraph by adding sentences to the front and end. And, they will write short responses to prompts of their choice.
