Greetings Families,
I hope you are enjoying your three-day weekend and that the students are enjoying the R&R part of it. On Friday night, my varsity girls' basketball team ended their season with a loss to Baboquivari, a reservation school west of Tuscan. That means that its time to start the middle school girls' basketball season, but thankfully it is four days a week instead of six.
The students had a fun Great Hearts Day celebration. I want to say thank you to all of the families who volunteered in the classroom and to those who provided times for the snack. The students got to do some team building games. The one I enjoyed watching the most, and which had the most varied levels of success, was the four-man carry. Four students had to link arms and carry one student about twenty feet before switching to the next. It was pretty fun seeing them work together to complete the activity.
Lessons
History: Last week, students looked at how things were not going very well for the Continental Army versus the superior British Military. However, due to Washington's leadership and cunning, the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night to find an unexpecting Hessian army sleeping. This victory gave the Continental Army not only an important win but much-needed supplies. This week, students will student the battle of Saratoga and the terrible winter at Valley Forge.
Literature: Students will continue reading the remarkable story of Nat Bowditch.
Math: This week in math, students will review the thousands place value for a test on Wednesday. They will then study rounding decimals and be tested on Friday. Here is the Khan Academy link, and I will place the video below.
Poetry: Students should continue to work toward memorizing "Paul Revere's Ride." Recitations will take place during week 9.
Greek and Latin Roots: Students will be assessed on roots 67-69 this week.
Science: Last week, students completed the study guide for the Geology final. The test will be on Friday. This week, students will be writing a paper where they compare the difference between two things that change the surface of the earth with one being fast and the other being slow. Here is the Quizlet for the geology test, and I'll embed it below.
Spalding: Students will learn new words this week and be assessed on Friday.
