I hope you have had a great weekend. I'm looking forward to getting back. Only this week and part on next until an extended break for Thanksgiving. I have family coming into town, so that should be a lot of fun.
This week was a real joy, as it was a blessing to see the students present their history presentations. I was very pleased with the effort the students put into their projects and the way they presented their presentations. Though some struggled with eye contact, which is expected on their first presentation, many students did a great job of engaging the audience with their eyes and tone.
Below are some updates and the lessons for the week.
Tutoring: Cancelled Wednesday
For the families who have students participating in tutoring on Wednesday, tutoring will be canceled that day due to the concert. However, the regular tutoring time is still on for Tuesday.
Winter Concert
Archway Arete will hold the Winter Concert at Higley Center for Performing Arts (4132 E Pecos Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295) on Wednesday, November 20th. Kindergarten should arrive at 4:45 pm and 1st-2nd grade should arrive at 5:00 pm. The K-2 concert begins at 5:30 pm. Grades 3rd-5th should arrive at 6:30 pm and their concert begins at 6:45 pm. If your family has children in a lower and upper-grade level, please have the older child sit with your family until the end of the K-2 concert.

Homework
Last week, with the history presentations and Ms. Chilson helping out in kindergarten this week with teachers being absent downstairs, she wasn't able to get all of the homework checked in on time this week. However, Friday, she was finally able to get it all checked. Sadly, every day last week between five to seven students didn't turn in their nighly review homework in math. To help curb this, students who routinely neglect to complete their homework will start sitting alone at lunch to complete their math review while they eat. These math review exercises are very important in keeping the students fresh on previously taught math content. When they neglect to do their homework, they lose this valuable learning opportunity. Hopefully, by having them complete them at lunch, they will make sure they are done at night so they don't miss out on important social opportunities.

Matt Silberman, new General Manager at Wedgewood Colby Falls east of our school, requests that Arete families avoid dropping off, parking, and picking up students in their parking lot. It is creating a problem with parking availability for their clients as well as safety issues.
Charger Night
Lace-up your skates, it's time to party! This month's Charger Night on Friday, November 15th is bound to be a groovy good time at Skateland (7 E. Southern Ave, Mesa, 85210). Doors open at 5:00 p.m.
Movie Night and Uniform Exchange
Please join the PSO for Movie Night and Uniform Exchange on Friday, November 22nd in the school courtyard. Bring your lawn chairs, watch Toy Story 4, eat some pizza and popcorn, and purchase some cold weather uniforms! The uniform exchange will start at 5:00 pm in the library, and the movie will begin at 6:15 pm in the courtyard. Please preorder pizza here.

Spelling Bee
I passed out the wordlist Friday for the Spelling Bee. The class spelling be will be this Friday.
- We encourage every student to prepare for participation in the Classroom Spelling Bee. However, students may choose to participate as they see fit.
- Once students have mastered the grade-specific words provided, move on to grade-level lists for first through eighth grade.
- Get a head start preparing for the Great Hearts District Bee and Phoenix Regional Bees through Merriam-Webster’s Spell It at http://myspellit.com.
The Annual Archway Arete Spelling Bee will be held Friday, January 10th at 5pm in the MPR. The top speller from each first- fifth-grade classroom will compete for the title of Archway Arete Spelling Bee Champion. The top two spellers (winner and first runner up) will receive a certificate and an invitation to the Great Hearts District Spelling Bee.
The top two spellers from Archway Arete are invited to attend the Great Hearts District Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 21st. Only the top Arete speller will participate in the District Bee unless it is determined that the runner up is needed. (Details and times to follow.)

Lessons
Grammar/Writing: Today, students should have completed their sentence outlines. If they did not finish these at school, they will be sent home today for homework. On Monday, students will take the sentence outlines and adjust them as necessary to write their rough drafts. The challenge here will be sentence fluency, which was a struggle for them in their last paper. On Tuesday, students will have the opportunity to peer edit each other's work and will take their papers home to have you look at them as well. On Wednesday, students will type their final essays. After that, students will write another information/expository paper independently.
History: Next week, students will start their study of Arizona history. If you would like to look through the packet, which includes the reader, you can find it here. This week the focus will be on Arizona regions and Arizona's rivers and lakes.
Literature: In literature this week, we will be reading through chapter 20 of Robin Hood.
Poetry: This week, students will be reciting "The Sin of Omission." They will also be discussing the meaning of this poem on Wednesday afternoon.

Math: Students were introduced to division and fractions last week, which wasn't too challenging for most of them because of how similar it is to improper fractions. For example, 7 divided by 4 is equal to 7/4. From there, students are able to use the same procedures to simplify the fraction to 1 3/4 that they used before. Following the test on Tuesday, students will learn about fractions of a set.
Greek and Latin Roots: This week, students will be assessed on roots 39-41. Next week, students will take a longer review check over roots 1-44. I've embedded a fun matching game below that students may use or you may find the Quizlet here.
Science: Last week, students were introduced to fronts, which is when two air masses with different temperatures and humidities meet to create weather. This week, students will continue to look at how weather and air pressure (with respect to density) are related, and how this allows meteorologists to predict weather and how it can cause severe weather. There are two science quizzes this week: Tuesday and Thursday. I've pushed both of those back a day to allow more time for us to review in class. I'll put the study notes below.
Spalding: Students will learn thirty words this week. This week will be a little different. They will learn fifteen words on Monday and another fifteen on Tuesday. They will practice them on Wednesday and take the test on Thursday. This is to create space both in studying and in the day for the spelling bee on Friday.
