I hope you have a great weekend. Here are the lessons for week seven of the third quarter.
No School Monday - Presidents' Day
Lessons
Writing/Grammar: Students will continue to edit prior papers during week seven. The goal is to have these papers ready for publication during week eight.
History: The American Revolution started with some setbacks to the Colonial Army, but things would turn in time. In history, students will learn how the war effort was going and about major battles like Saratoga and hardships like Valley Forge.
Literature: In literature, students will continue to learn about Nat's adventurous life in Carry On, Mr. Bowditch and will spend some time studying the different parts of a ship.
Math: Having learned decimals to the thousandth place this week, next week students will learn how to round decimals to the one-decimal place (the tenths place). After that test, students will review for a cumulative test covering material they've studied all year.
Poetry: Students have two weeks, weeks seven and eight, to memorize "Paul Revere's Ride." During week nine, students should be prepared to recite this poem. Given its length, students will recite it in groupings. I will assign groups and allow them time to practice together during week eight.
Greek and Latin Roots: Students will have a brief review check on roots 67-69. They will also learn the next six. Students will be tested on the first 75 roots during week nine.
Science: Students are nearing the end of their study of geology. They will take rock quiz on Wednesday. The rock fold in their notebooks is what they should study to prepare for this quiz. The quiz is more difficult because it is in essay format. Here are the study questions:

1. What is the root word of “igneous”? Explain how this root word helps us understand how igneous rocks are formed.
2. How are sedimentary rocks formed? What does “lithification” mean?
3. “Metamorphic” means to transform, or change, form. Which two forces help to form metamorphic rocks?
Students will then start a writing assignment where they compare and contrast things that cause quick and slow geological changes.
Spalding: Students will learn twenty new words this week.
