I hope you have enjoyed the long weekend. I tried to keep the homework a little light over the weekend. Last week was a packed week. This was especially true with them taking the MAP assessments on Thursday. Hopefully, the long weekend with little homework will allow them to return revived.
Here are the lessons for this week.
Lessons
Writing/Grammar: Students will start their second paper of the quarter this week. They will be writing an expository essay on animal extinction. The key questions is: What role do humans play in preventing animals from becoming extinct?
History: Having learned about the Seven Years' War that took place in Europe and the French and Indian War that took place in the eastern part of North American, students will now look at how the English planned to pay off all of their war debts. Their plan did not go as they had hoped as the colonists did not like that they were being expected to finance the British government while not being represented in Paraliament. This week, students will learn about the Stamp Act crisis, read and discuss Partic Henry's resolution, and other acts of Parliament that frustrated the colonists. There is a quiz Firday that is open-notes.
Literature: Students will be reading chapters 7-10 of Prince Caspian. On another note, if a student is absent, they are still required to read and complete the summary for the chapter they were absent for. However, this time spend reading and writing should count toward the 25 minutes of nightly reading time. It is not expected that they read literature and then read for an additional 25 minutes.
Math: Students will continue their study of geometry. They will be tested on circles and solid figures on Wednesday and then move into a review of area and perimeter. There are math tests on Wednesday and Friday.
Poetry: Students will be expected to recite "The Concorn Hymn" this week.
Greek and Latin Roots: Students will have a review check on roots 55-57 this week and will learn the next three.
Science: The students are continuing their study of geology this week by studying volcanoes. We will end the week by building volcanoes--though sadly not with real magma. I will be in need of some bottles. Snapple bottles are the best. If you would like to send some in, that would be very helpful. I will also need some baking soda and vinegar. I'll create a Signup Genius for people to note what they will be sending in.
Spalding: There will be twenty words in Spalding this week.
