I hope you are doing well and are enjoying your week. It has been good to have the students back in the classroom with our more regular routines.
Next week will be a fun week with Read-a-Thon. An email was sent out from the class moms about the event. If you can, know that you are welcome to attend. If you are not fingerprinted, please let me know by Monday that you would like to come so we can plan an escort for you.
Even though the quarter has just begun, there has already started to be an issue with homework not being completed and/or not turned in. I will be sending home grade reports tomorrow. Please review these and see if your child has missing work. If your child has been absent, it might show that they have missing work as well. Once they get that completed and turned in, they will get full credit for what they missed. Students who turn in late work, not due to absences, will receive 80% of its value.
Lessons
Grammar/Writing: In grammar, students will continue their study of conjunctions. By adding this one part of speech, the classification and diagrams have become much more complex. The students will start working through a conjunction packet on Friday and will complete it next week. This packet will be a very helpful resource because it covers the complexity of conjunctions, but also reviews most of the other things they have learned this year. They will end the week with a look at independent and dependent clauses.
History: After this week's test, the students will start a study of the Magna Carta. This will continue into next week. This document greatly impacted English law and had tremendous significance on the development of American republicanism. Students will then start their study of the Hundred Years War. There is a quiz next Thursday as well. Here are the study questions for that quiz.

Literature: Students will continue to read Robin Hood next week. In addition to reading each chapter, students should be writing a summary for each chapter, working on the setting worksheets for each chapter, and working on the STEAL sheet for Robin Hood.
Math: In math, students will continue their study of factions. If your child is still having a hard time memorizing their math facts, I suggest using this quizlet. You can set it to speak and to go automatically. The students should be able to say the correct number before the voice does. This is an easy way for students to practice their math facts and self-correct their mistakes.
In respect to fractions, next week's chapter will be on adding and subtracting fractions. Students will learn that when adding and subtracting fractions, they must have a common denominator. Then, they should add or subtract the numerators while the denominator stays the same.

Poetry: Students should have been working toward memorizing "Clouds" Christine Georgina Rossetti for the past two weeks. Next week, students will recite this poem.
Greek and Latin Roots: Next week, students will take a Greek and Latin roots quiz over the first 32 roots. This includes the 25 they learned last quarter and the next seven. You can find the PowerPoint for the roots here.
Science: Students will finish their study of life science next week and will be tested on Friday. Students have mostly completed their study guide already, and should, therefore, continue to study that study guide to prepare for the text. Here is a Quizet that might be helpful as well. Once finished with the test, students will learn about the water cycle as they start the meteorology unit.
Spalding: Spalding will follow the regular regiment.
