I hope everyone has enjoyed their extended weekend. I've enjoyed having a little extra time to get some work done on Presidents' Day. If you are unfamiliar with how Presidents' Day came to be, you can read about it here. I also found it interesting that there was a Uniform Monday Holiday Act to get federal employees more three day weekends. I guess I now benefit from it, so I probably shouldn't complain. Anyways, here are the lessons for this week.

Anyways, here are the lessons for this week.
Lessons
History: During week 7, students will continue to study the start of the American Revolution and begin memorizing their sections of The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. They will discuss the circumstances that led to the Intolerable Acts and how they impacted the colonies.
Science: During week 7, students will turn their attention to weathering and erosion. Last week, students explored a lab on weathering and erosion. The lab is intended to give them the prior knowledge necessary to interpret weathering and erosion and to discuss it. Weathering is the wearing away of land, rock, and soil. Weathering is the process by which solid materials break down. Examples include water seeping into cracks and then freezing, causing the rocks to break apart. Plant roots do the same thing as they search for water and grow over time. Oxidation is also an example of weathering, such as when water and oxygen cause iron to change into iron oxide (rust). Next week, students will explore erosion, which is when these broken down parts of rocks caused by weathering are swept away.
Language Arts: The Spalding regiment remains the same. Students are expected to copy the words once with markings and rules each night, Tuesday through Thursday, and will be quizzed on Friday. They will begin the pre-writing work for their persuasive essays on Tuesday and their final drafts are due Friday. Students will be reading chapter's 7-11 of Carry On, Mr. Bowditch and will have a "Parts of a Boat" activity at the end of the week. Students should also start regularly studying their Greek and Latin roots if they have not already done so to prepare for the quiz that will be on March 9th. I've created a Quizlet for those roots that you can find here.
Math: The students have done a very good job during the decimals unit thus far. On the last three tests, the averages have been 97.1%, 87.9%, and 91.7%. This week, the students will look at rounding decimals and prepare for the next assessment. Due to the accelerated progress they have made, the next test will be this Friday and it will be over all of Unit 6: tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and rounding decimals.
