Quarter 3, Week 4 Lessons

Greetings Families,

I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekend. I had the pleasure of taking my family to the zoo on Saturday, which was very enjoyable with the cooler temperatures. If your family takes a trip to the zoo this spring, ask your child to explain binomial nomenclature to you (the scientific way of naming animals according to their genus and species).

Here are the lessons for this week:

Lessons

Math: In math this week, we depart from geometry and turn our attention to decimals. I will be collecting your child's Singapore textbooks and handing out the next volume. These books are no longer consumables and they were bound for protection. If your child's copy of this book has been severely damaged, I will notify the headmasters of the damage and let them determine any appropriate consequence.

This week, students will focus on decimals in the tenths and hundreds place, with some consideration given to money. If you would like to help your child think through decimals this week, allow them to pay for items at the grocery store, or use receipts to discuss how decimals are another way of expressing fractions.

Science: During science this week, the students will have an opportunity to erupt the volcanoes they built last week. For those who contributed items for this project, I would like to say thank you. The rest of the week, students will be learning about hot springs, geysers, and the formation of mountains, which include volcanic, folded, dome-shaped, fault block, and ocean. There will be two quizzes this week. Both of these will be reviewing life science. Thursday’s quiz of next week will also cover life science. On Monday of week five, February 6th, students will take their second geology quiz. This will be a longer quiz and students should be prepared to answer some short answer questions. If you would like, you can review them on the following questions over the next week to help equip them for success:

• How do volcanic eruptions affect the atmosphere and environment? (Already Taught)
• How do the tectonic plates cause natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis? (Already Taught)
• Choose one type of mountain (volcanic, folded, dome-shaped, fault block) and explain how it is formed. (Will Be Taught Wednesday - Friday)
• Old Faithful is a large geyser in Yellowstone National Park. Why do geysers, like Old Faithful, erupt? (Will Be Taught Tuesday)

History: Students will take a quiz on the 13 colonies Monday. They should know where they are located and how to spell them. The rest of the week will look at the conflict between the French and British in the colonies and the French and Indian War.

Language Arts: In language arts, students will resume the usual Spalding regiment. Students will begin writing an opinion essay. In Prince Caspian, students will read through chapter 15. If a student is ever absent or misses literature time, please have them catch up on the reading they miss at home. They can use their 20 minutes of nightly reading to accommodate this requirement. Finally, students will be expected to recite the poem, "The Flag Goes By" tomorrow.
