I hope everyone was able to enjoy their Thanksgiving break and day. There are many reasons for us to give thanks. Though the official day of thanks has passed, you may find this beneficial to read and to read with your family.
With Thanksgiving break concluding, we now enter three solid weeks with no days off. This is a time when many students start to slack because winter break is impending. I ask that you encourage your child to give their best effort each day and to finish strong.
Below are the lessons for the week, a note about the history test sent home last week, and upcoming assessments dates.
Literature: In literature, students will discuss whether or not they feel Robin Hood is a hero. This is the precursor to a larger discussion next week after the book is completed. In grammar, there is an assessment on chapter 7, and then students will write a personal narrative essay. In Spalding, there are more words and more markings.
Science: In science this week, students will continue their study of meteorology. Students will learn about air pressure, wind, fronts, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes. As a demonstration, students will learn how to build and use a barometer. In groups, students will build and use anemometer if the wind is blowing.

Though these videos are not meant to replace traditional studying and there is some content for which I cannot find helpful videos, for some students, these videos might prove helpful. I have categorized them according to the units and additionally according to whether they were used as a part of the curriculum. You can also find links to the Quizlets for each unit here. Students would do well to refresh themselves with old units from time to time to hinder forgetfulness.
History: This week, students will begin their study of ancient China. They will look at the emperor Shihuangdi and some of his accomplishments, as well as the role of technology and trade in the growth of China. They will take a short quiz on Friday. Students will also be assigned their country in Europe for the Europe project--look for more details coming soon!

Math: In math, students continue their look at fractions of a set. This will also involve students using their knowledge of fractions in word problems. On Monday, I am sending home the practice test for the test that is on Friday. This document is due on Friday, but I am sending it home to allow families more time to study together. Not every skill on the practice test will be mastered prior to its being sent home.

Prior to the break, the students' history tests were sent home. Hopefully, you received this over the break. The class average for this test was 86.6%.
