I hope you are well and that you are enjoying your weekend. This morning, my family went to Riverview Park in Mesa to play in the splash pad. If you haven't been, it is some great cheap fun. They also have some fun rope climbing features that are pretty awesome, though the tallest one frightens me with some younger ones.
Also, on Wednesday, we will having a Mayflower activity. We will map out the size of the lower deck of the Mayflower, which is were 102 Pilgrims had to stay during their journey across the sea. You can discuss this with your child if you like. He or she should be able to tell you that this part of the ship had low ceilings because it was meant for cargo, not people. It was also dark and damp. With students are teachers, we will have a little over 90 people in the box and the students will get an idea of what they had to experience. After that, we will allow them to go searching for gold. The gold will be gold chocolate coins. If you can, it would be helpful if you sent a couple dollars in with your child on Monday and I'll go purchase these on Tuesday. I'll buy as many as I can with the money I receive and I will cover the cost to make sure we have enough.

Language Arts:
We will continue our Spalding list. We are wrapping up our writing instruction with The Story of the World and we will complete a few comprehension exercises for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
History: This week we will be discussing the founding of New York and Pennsylvania. Students will have a chance to review for the assessment through a favorite class review game--BINGO! The assessment is on Friday. This is our last assessment for the year in history!
Science: In science next week, students will be looking at what a galaxy and universe are, the Big Bang theory, and a history of space exploration. For many families and students, the origin of the universe can be a sensitive subject. The third grade team will be approaching the Big Bang theory as a possible way to make since of the physical evidence. At the same time, we will acknowledge that there are leading scientist who admit weaknesses to the theory and new evidence may give rise to an improved theory. We ask that you consider discussing the origin and age of the universe with your child if it is closely connected to your family's traditions.
Math: After spending this week preparing for the Great Hearts Singapore Math assessment, next week we will resume our study of geometry. We will have the assessment on Thursday. On Friday, we will start our look at money.
