Quarter 2, Week 1 Lessons

Dear Families,

I hope your students are enjoying their fall break!  Here is an update for what conference week will look like.  The entire week is half days.  Please remember to pick your child up at 12:05 or 12:25, respectively. Also, remember that there will be no clubs next week.

Assessments at a Glance

Lessons

Math

We will be working on word problems for multiplication and division.  This means that bar models are back!  We will be learning how to create bar models for multiplication and division, which will be a new and exciting challenge. I would also recommend that you take a look at MathPlayground’s multiplication and division modeling exercises. There are tutorials and word problems that can help you understand the process and will provide your child with some guided practice.

Language Arts

Literature
We will be focusing on the short story “Hansel and Gretel”.  This will be a fun way to kick off the quarter before we jump into Pinocchio in week two.  Please have your scholar bring in their copy of Pinocchio!

Writing/Grammar
Due to the half days, we will not be focusing on writing/grammar this week.

Spalding
We will be taking our monthly progress test (not for a grade) on Monday.  We will learn 20 new words this week.  The first assessment of the quarter is on Friday!

Science

In science, will be learning about John Muir, the important ecologist who played a role in our nations national parks.

History

We are going to begin a short unit on World Rivers this week!

I look forward to seeing you this upcoming week for conferences. Please be sure to bring a note of any important topics you would like to discuss. I will try to keep my notes brief to allow for time for you to discuss what you have seen from your child this quarter.

Best,
Michael Naaktgeboren
