Greetings Parents,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. Today begins the final week of school. It amazes me how quickly time has passed. This week will be both a joyful celebration of what the students have accomplished, the relationships built, and the memories we will share, and yet, at the same time, it is a season of sorrow as those I have come to know well and who have become dear to my heart will depart.
Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!
This week, your children will be treated to a special lunch on Tuesday (pizza) because third grade purchases the most year books. If your child should not eat pizza because of dietary restrictions or other concerns, please email Ms. Miller (lmiller@archwayarete.org) and me.
Here are the lessons for the week.
Math
This week in math the students will be learning about area, perimeter, and volume. We will have normal lessons and homework this week. The students will be taking an end of year Singapore assessment that reviews the students' understanding of specific Singapore strategies. This assessment will be very valuable in evaluating teaching and student learning for next year. The assessment is on Tuesday.
Language Arts
Poem: "Love and Death," by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Spalding: The students will have a regular Spalding week, except that they will not be assessed on the words they learn this week. Rather, they will be taking another 50 Spalding assessment to evaluate spelling grade level and retention of learned words. This assessment will be Thursday.
Literature: The students finished the Little House on the Prairie last week and this week we will discuss the last chapters of the book and prepare for the final. The final for the book will be on Thursday and students will review for it on Tuesday.
Writing and Grammar: The students will have a usual week for writing and grammar, but will not be asked to turn in a typed copy of their summary this week.
Reading Log: The students are still expected to read this week, Monday-Thursday. Please ensure that they are filling out their reading logs daily, as these will be collected on Friday.
History
The students are taking their history test today and their will be no more history lessons this week.
Science
The students will be discussing space exploration today, but the content from today's lesson will not be on the assessment. Tuesday will be spent reviewing and the assessment will be on Wednesday.

Thursday: Literature & 50 Word Spalding Assessment
Friday: Little House on the Prairie Day
History: Students currently have the study guide for history and should be preparing for their last test. We will have a review day tomorrow to cover this material. There will be no history instruction following Monday.
Math: This is a cumulative Singapore math test designed by Great Hearts staff from many different schools. It will serve as a measuring rod to understand where students are as they go into next year and to evaluate weakness in teaching. The students should treat this like AzMERIT and Galileo.
Science: The students will have completed study guides for science on Friday and will have a review day on Tuesday. Students will have a science lesson on Monday covering exploration of space, but this material will not be on the test. The students will take their science test on Wednesday and there will be no science lessons on Thursday and Friday.
Literature: Students will complete the Little House on the Prairie reading today. They will review the material from chapters 25-26 on Monday and have a review day on Tuesday. The students will take the literature test on Thursday.
50 Word Spalding Assessment: The students will be taking another 50 word Spalding assessment to see if they are at or above grade level, which will be important for 4th grade teachers to know. This assessment will be on Thursday.
Little House on the Prairie Day: On Friday, the students will be celebrating the end of the year in Little House style. Students are still required to wear their uniforms. The times for the party are from 9:30-11:30. Further details will be coming soon on items to bring and activities.
