Greetings Parents,
I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Here are the lessons
for next week.
Language Arts
Poem: “The Charge of the Light Brigade (stanza 1),”
by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Idiom: “Last straw”
Spalding: We will be learning 30 new words and reviewing
the phonograms. They will be taking the normal assessment on Friday.
Writing and Grammar: We will continue our work of
summarizing and copying from dictation. We are also adding comprehension
activities. In grammar we are continuing our refining of diagramming sentences and
will be looking at compound verbs.
Literature: In literature we are reading The Jungle Book. There are a number of
reading group days that fall on different days each week. Be sure to see if
there are days available for you to come in and participate. There were also a
few students who have not brought in their copy of the book. Please ensure that
your student has his or her copy for class.
Math
We finished our study of metric measurements last week and
this week we begin our study of customary units. Students will be introduced to
inches, feet, yards, and miles. I would encourage you to randomly quiz your
child. While you are driving down the road, you might ask how many inches are
in a foot, or feet in a yard, or feet in a mile. This will be much more
difficult for your child than metric units were because it is not base ten. They
will be assessed on their knowledge on Friday. I would also encourage you to
keep their minds thinking about multiplication and division.
History
We will be finishing our study of the Vikings this week. The
students will be introduced to Leif Ericson and review what we have learned
about the Vikings. They students will be assessed on their knowledge of the
Vikings on Thursday.
Science
This week we continue our study of sound and the ear. We
spent a full lesson discussing vocal cords on Friday and the students’ homework
was to explain to you how vocal cords work using their balloons. I hope you
enjoyed seeing their learning, but that the balloons weren’t too much of an
annoyance. This week we will focus on the ear and begin reviewing for the
assessment next week.
