We are continuing our sprint though introductory words. Each night students will bring words home to practice. On Friday we will have our second spelling test on the words from Monday-Wednesday. We are also preparing for cursive. This week, the spelling homework will be an important part of developing solid handwriting skills. Work that does not meet the standard will be sent home to be redone. It is important that students are doing their best and writing neatly before they transition to cursive. Please encourage your child to do his or her best each night on these assignments.
Literature
We will be reading and discussing chapters 6 and 7 of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this week. The test from last week will be returned early this week as well.
Math
We are continuing to review sum and difference this week. Apart of this review is learning how to use bar models to solve equations. In the workbook pages there will usually be some bar models required. Please ensure that your child is doing these bar models, as they are required. Simply putting the correct answer is not sufficient. If your child is struggling with the concept and you are not equipped to explain how to use bar models, please leave a note in their workbooks and inform your student to discuss it with me before the school day starts.
History
This week students will learn how to use maps to determine elevation and locations. As students expand their knowledge of maps, please reference direction and map skills in day-to-day life. An example would be asking students what direction you are traveling while driving down the road. The grid system of the greater Phoenix area makes this pretty easy. You could ask your child what the crossroads are of frequented places: home, Arete, grocery store, church, recreational venues, etc. You could also ask them what corner of an intersection a place is located. An example is that Arete is located on the SE corner of Baseline and Greenfield, or South of Baseline and West of Greenfield. These simple activities will help reinforce many of the concepts learned in our geography discussions.
Science
We have spent a good deal of time discussing animal classification. Students should be able to clearly define what it means to be a vertebrate, invertebrate, cold-blooded, or warm-blooded. Though we have not discussed the classes of vertebrates in detail, the students should know that the five classes of the Subphylum Vertebrata are mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and birds. They will bring home a study guide for this material on Monday and be quizzed on Tuesday. This week we will discuss in detail what it means to be a fish and amphibian.

Tutoring
This week will begin the tutoring time for struggling students after school from 2:45-3:15 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursdays and Friday, and 1:45-2:15 on Wednesday. These tutoring times will be for a limited number of students. The schedule will be:
- Monday - Language Arts
- Tuesday - Math
- Wednesday - Language Arts & Math
- Thursday - Language Arts & History
- Friday - Math & Science
Class Parents
On Curriculum night a number of individuals signed up to volunteer. Thank you for your willingness to serve our classroom. No parents specifically signed up for classroom parent. However, there were a number of parents who signed up for "whatever." I randomly selected two parents to fulfill the roles of classroom parents. I will email those individuals tomorrow. If you receive an email in regard to this position, please reply as soon as possible if you are able to fulfill this role. Once those two positions are filled, the other opportunities will be discussed and filled.
