I hope that everyone has enjoyed their three day weekend. Please remember to review your children's math tests and to have them return the signed paper.

Language Arts

Spalding
We are continuing our sprint though 1 and 2 grade words and learning the Spalding rules. The students have done well at learning these. Please continue to help them study and master their phonograms.
Literature
We will be reading chapter five of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. On Friday, the students will be tested on their knowledge of the book up to this point. All of the questions will come from the worksheets that the students have completed each week. There will also be a homework packet sent home, which students are to complete each night. The packet is meant to be done without the assistance of the previously filled out worksheets. If a student cannot remember the right answer, then the worksheets may be uses. This homework exercise is meant to help students prepare for the test on Friday.
Writing with Ease
We are continuing to work on hearing and summarizing stories. We are also learning how to write with correct grammar and punctuation.
First Language Lessons
We have focused on nouns up to this point. Here are some things your child should be able to tell you. Nouns names a person, place, thing, or idea. Usually, add s to a noun to form the plural. Add es to nouns ending is s, sh, ch, x, z. Nouns ending with a y, that have a consonant before the y, change the y to i and add es. Nouns ending with a y, that have a vowel before the y, just add s. Common nouns, like girl, school, and city, begin with a lower case letter. Proper nouns, like Amy, Arete, and Phoenix, begin with a capital letter. This week we are moving into verbs.
Singapore Math
Singapore Math is a program that emphasizes the use and understanding of word problems. We will continue our study of sum and difference words problems this week. We will be having a quiz on Wednesday.
Science
Students should have masted their understanding of vertebrate vs. invertebrate and warm- vs. cold-blooded animals last week. This week we will be taking that information and applying it to classifying animals. On Wednesday, we will be looking at taxonomy at large. This is meant to be an introduction to something they will master in future grades. On Friday we will discuss the five classes of the Subphylum Vertebrata: mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and birds. On Wednesday and Friday night the students will have homework. That homework is to explain to a parent what they learned in class that day.
History
We are continuing to learn about the world around us through interpreting maps. On Tuesday we will be observing political and physical maps. With political maps, we will observe boundaries and capitals. With physical maps, we will observe landforms. On Thursday we will consider the different regions for the United States and why they are classified together.
