Greetings Parents,
We are off and running on Week 3. Today was a great start. Here is the rundown for week three's lessons.
Language Arts
Last week we learned 30 words and the students did well at learning the rules and phonograms. Now we are into hyperdrive. We will be learning/reviewing 30 words a day, but don't worry. Most of these words should be pretty easy for third graders. We need to get though these words pretty quick so we can start learning third grade words.
We are continuing our reading of the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The students seem to be engaged in and enjoying the story. I would encourage you to talk to them about it and have them keep you informed about what is happening in the story.
The students have been reading some fun short stories in Writing with Ease. For the activities we are summarizing the stories and working on copying dictation. Some of our students have difficult times summarizing things they read. When your child does their nightly reading, if time permits you might have them explain what they read to you. If it is short story they should be able to do this in just a few sentences.
Math
Tomorrow is the second test and it covers Unit 1. The students should be studying for their test tonight from their textbooks. There are a couple of pages they are supposed to complete. This isn't to be turned in tomorrow. It is just a way for them to make sure that they know the material that will be tested. The rest of the week will be spent on the often neglected skill of mental math.
Science
We are continuing our study of classification this week. We will be talking about classifying animals as vertebrates and invertebrates. We will finish up the week discussing the difference between warm- and cold-blooded animals.
History
Most students did a great job learning about the continents and oceans last week, and other world map items. This week we are focusing on the cardinal and intermediate directions. The students should be drawing their own compass rose tonight to solidify their understanding of direction. We will also learn about regions and capitals as the week progresses.
