I hope that you have had a great weekend. It was great to see many of you Friday night at the social. Last week my wife has grown weary by my absence from home, but by being able to see the children and meet many of you her heart was strengthened. Thank you to those who kindly greeted and exchanged with her. Though her presence is not in the classroom, without her efforts and encouragement I could not be where I am today.
Here is a simple rundown of this weeks activities.
Language Arts
Math
During math time students will continue to review place value. We will also be discussing how to compare and order 4-digit numbers. Students will be tested on this material on Wednesday. After the test, rounding will be introduced and continued on Thursday. Students will be tested on rounding on Friday.
History and Geography
During history time our students will continue to work on their understanding of our globe, continents and oceans, how to read a map, and other aspects of geography. Students will have a tested on Friday.
Science
During science time our students will continue to learn about the scientific method. Students will be introduced to experimental procedures and their importance. Students will be tested on their knowledge of the scientific method Wednesday. The end of the week will be used to introduce classification.

Language Arts
- Literature
This week we will begin reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. If students have not brought in their books, it is important that they do so quickly. - Spalding
Students will review the phonograms they learned last week and will be tested on the first 54 phonograms Tuesday. If you have chosen not to purchase the Spalding phonograms, please visit the resource page on this site to download the pdf. for homemake cards. There is also a link to help with the sounds of the phonograms and the cues students will need to memorize.
Students will also be bringing home ten words a night Monday through Wednesday to memorize by writing them out using the Spalding marks. It is suggested that parents/guardians read the words aloud to the student. The students should write and label the words as the handout shows. Students will be tested on all thirty words Friday. - Writing With Ease
Students will be learning how to identify the central narrative thread in a short story and how to summarize. Students will also be learning about capitalization and punctuation. - First Language Lessons
Students will lean how to identify different parts of a book by name, what a noun is, and how to form plurals. - Poetry
Students will discuss and memorize a poem by Eve Merriam, "Catch a Little Rhyme." - Proverbs and Idioms
Students will learn the meaning and history of the idiom, "Beat around the bush."
